The Georgia brevet series is a collection of bicycle rides run under the guidance of Randonneurs USA (RUSA).  They are long distance rides done on challenging courses to test oneself against the clock and weather. These brevets are run with a defined time allotment but are non-competitive in nature.  Camaradarie and self-sufficiency are generally more respected than being the first finisher.

The word brevet is French for "certificate" or "medal."  Pronounced "bra-vay," they are generally ridden in progressive distances of 200k, 300k, 400k, and 600k.  If a rider completes the entire series, they may qualify to ride one of the longer 1200k brevets like the Cascade 1200 or Paris-Brest-Paris.

For 2008, there will be a few early season brevets starting in Augusta followed by the Atlanta series that most of us are familiar with.  The Augusta rides will be run by Kevin Kaiser, and are relatively flat and are a good warm-up for the Atlanta series.  The Atlanta rides are hosted by Andy Akard, and are typically more challenging. This website provides information about both the Atlanta and Augusta brevets.

"So after 7 months of preparation I was back in Paris after my first PBP with all the feelings of fatigue, pleasure and pain after just barely finishing the event with my time of 89h 45m. (The time limit is 90 hours - you see.)"

2005 was my "Rookie" year in the sport of Randonneuring. My interest in the sport started when Jeff Bauer would e-mail us ride reports for his 2004 distance cycling events. Then in January 2005, an e-mail was sent out looking for riders interested in some longer distance cycling events. I got in to this sport telling myself that I would do each of the qualifying Brevets (i.e. 200K, 300K, 400K, and 600K) one at a time, to see if I could do the distance comfortably, before deciding to proceed on to the next harder one. Then, if I qualified, I would ride the 1200K Gold Rush Randonnee (GRR) at the end of the season.
