The word brevet is French for "certificate" or "medal." Pronounced "bra-vay," they are generally ridden in progressive distances of 200k, 300k, 400k, and 600k. If a rider completes the entire series, they may qualify to ride one of the longer 1200k brevets like the Cascade 1200 or Paris-Brest-Paris. For 2008, there will be a few early season brevets starting in Augusta followed by the Atlanta series that most of us are familiar with. The Augusta rides will be run by Kevin Kaiser, and are relatively flat and are a good warm-up for the Atlanta series. The Atlanta rides are hosted by Andy Akard, and are typically more challenging. This website provides information about both the Atlanta and Augusta brevets.
